Monday Evening Playgroup for
University Students, Faculty, Staff

Wakoh Shannon Hickey, BCC

Baltimore, MD

Drop in Monday eves., Fall 2014:
Sept. 8 to Dec. 8, 5:15-6:15 p.m.

Join us for a fun-loving romp through
self-expression and community building!

We will: Free up our bodies to move;
Shake loose the stories that want to be heard;
Play around with our voices;
Connect with one another in un-tense ways;
Discover tricks and tools that make life easier, richer, more delicious!

InterPlay integrates mind/body/heart/spirit through enjoyable “forms” of movement, stillness, storytelling, and music-making. It’s an art form, a spiritual practice (for some), and a means of community-building grounded in improvisation and play. It's also sneaky-deep. Come discover more about your own creativity, joy, ease, and body-wisdom!

No experience necessary: InterPlay is accessible to every body. Come as you are: serious, silly, self-conscious, bold, exhausted, energized: whatever! You can participate however your bodyspirit wants, and/or simply witness. There’s no wrong way to do InterPlay.

Cost: Free to newcomers! Thereafter, love offerings accepted: Suggested donation $5 per session, but no one turned away for lack of funds.

Registration/Information: Wakoh Shannon Hickey, whickey@ndm.edu

Venue

Notre Dame of Maryland University Dance Studio

MBK Sports Complex, 4701 N. Charles St.
Baltimore, MD 21210
The Dance Studio is on the ground floor of the MBK Sports Complex, near the gymnasium, below the offices for Campus Ministry & Service. From the main entrance to campus, find Gibbons Hall -- the campus' signature building, a brick edifice with a bell tower. If you're facing the front of Gibbons, Theresa Hall is attached to it on your right. MBK is the next building to your right; it is between Theresa Hall and the LeClerc Auditorium. Some visitor parking (including spaces for people with disabilities) is available on the circle drives in front of these buildings; other spaces reserved for visitors can be found in the parking lots around campus. Wheelchair access to the Dance Studio is available from both the circle drive in front of MBK and from the parking lots behind Gibbons and Theresa Halls, MBK, and the LeClerc Auditorium. Leaders
Wakoh Shannon Hickey, BCC
Rev. Wakoh Shannon Hickey, PhD, BCC, is a board-certified professional chaplain, educator, scholar, and interfaith activist in the Napa Valley of California. Wakoh, the Japanese religious name she received when she was ordained as a priest of Soto Zen Buddhism in 2003, rhymes with "taco." It means something like "harmony and happiness." Wakoh has practiced Buddhism since 1983 and is currently seeking dual affiliation as a Unitarian Universalist minister. Her first career was as a journalist covering politics, business, and law in the San Francisco Bay Area. Her second was/is as a professor of Religious Studies. Her third is as a chaplain, in both university and medical settings. She has worked full-time in hospice care since 2018. She is also the author of a ground-breaking history of mind-body healing; a kayaker; a servant to two cats; and -- when she's got a good breeze and a clear field -- a pilot of stunt kites. Wakoh started InterPlaying in 2003 to balance the structure and rigors of Zen monastic practice and of academic life. She became a Certified Interplay Leader in 2014. She seeks ways to incorporate contemplative practices and InterPlay into both teaching and chaplaincy, to help people connect with themselves and one another, explore their creativity, and tap into self-acceptance, confidence, and joy!
