"Perform the Book"
Seattle, WA
2:00 pm to 3:15 pm
This award-winning book is a mother’s true story of journeys taken outside the bounds of the ordinary: as her gay son struggles with AIDS and her daughter is diagnosed with breast cancer. Ultimately learning to triumph over despair, Warrior Mother is a mother’s manual of profound hope and healing.
In lieu of the usual author readings, author and improvisational artist Sheila K. Collins shares her award-winning memoir, Warrior Mother: Fierce Love, Unbearable Loss and the Rituals that Heal in a unique and engaging way.
Sheila dances, sings, tells about and reads from her memoir, and enlists the help of local InterPlay improvisational artists to respond to short passages from her book. Inspired by the author’s words, Seattle Area InterPlayers will use the improvisational dancing, singing, story telling forms of InterPlay to tell their own stories, connecting their lives to the author’s.
The first "Perform the Book" was in Edinburgh Scotland at the Fringe Book Festival in August 2013. Since then, performances of the book have been offered in theaters, bookstores, and at home concerts in Dallas, Fort Worth, and Austin TX, Pittsburgh PA, Oakland CA, Youngstown OH, Des Moines and Iowa City, IA, and Atlanta, GA. Now join us in Seattle!
